EV chargers fail occasionally. Mid-session failures are particularly frustrating because you’re committed to charging at that location and the failure leaves you in an awkward state — partially charged, possibly with a stuck cable, possibly with billing uncertainty.

This article walks through what to do when it happens, in order of likely effectiveness.

First moments: understand what happened

When a session stops unexpectedly, the first response is to understand what just happened.

Check sources of information:

Your car’s display. Most EVs show charging status. “Charging stopped” with a reason.

The charger’s display. Many chargers show error messages or status.

Your network’s app. Usually shows real-time session status with reasons.

The cable. Is it physically still connected? Did someone unplug it?

  • Vehicle full. You hit your target SOC; charging completed normally.
  • Charger faulted. Internal error; reported on display.
  • Connection lost. Network or pilot pin issue.
  • Payment timeout. Some sessions auto-end after time limits.
  • Temperature throttle. Charger or battery too hot.
  • Authorization expired. Long sessions sometimes need re-auth.

If the session stopped due to vehicle full

Not a failure. Just done. Unplug, move on.

If the session stopped due to charger fault

A few things to try.

Unplug and reseat. Many transient faults clear when you unplug and replug.

Wait 30-60 seconds before reseating. Gives the charger time to reset.

Try a different stall. If multiple stalls exist, the problem may be that specific stall.

Restart via your app. Some apps let you trigger a session restart remotely.

Check next-charger options. If multiple attempts fail, move to a different charger if available.

If the session stopped due to connection issue

The cable came out, was tampered with, or signal was lost.

Re-seat the cable. Make sure it’s fully seated.

Verify visually. Check for damage to cable or connector.

Restart the session. Plug in fresh, authorize again.

If the session stopped due to payment / auth issue

Some networks auto-end sessions after maximum time or maximum cost.

Check your account. Are you over a limit?

Re-authorize and restart. Often works.

Last-last resort: a Level 1 outlet. Many businesses have outlets you might use for an hour to add enough range to reach a fast charger. Ask politely. Billing after a failed session

A few notes on how billing typically works.

Energy delivered, you pay for. Most networks bill based on actual kWh delivered. A failed session typically bills only for what was delivered before the failure.

Idle fees: if a session “ends” (no current flowing) but you’re still connected, some networks may apply idle fees. The intent is to prevent camping, but if the session ended through fault, you may dispute.

Reservation fees: if you reserved the stall and the failure was the network’s fault, you can usually dispute.

Check your statement. Sometimes errors happen; review and contest if needed.

Contesting: most networks have customer service that adjusts incorrect charges. Be polite, factual, have records (timestamps, error messages).

When the network is reliable but the charger isn’t

A pattern I’ve seen: someone has bad experiences with a specific network and assumes EV charging is broken.

Reality: networks have wide reliability differences. A bad experience at one network doesn’t predict the next.

Diversify network accounts. Have access to multiple networks — for example Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint, Tesla/Supercharger and Flo in North America, or Ionity, Fastned and Allego in Europe. Different reliability profiles cover each other’s gaps.

Don’t run battery too low before charging. Aim to arrive at chargers with 15-25% SOC. Less stress; more options if the first charger fails.
