EV Charging Speed and Time Quiz

Seven questions on the factors that actually determine how long charging takes — power, energy, state-of-charge tapering, temperature, and onboard chargers.

Q1. A 75 kWh EV is charged from 20% to 80% on a 7.2 kW Level 2 station. Approximately how long?
Q2. Why does charging slow down above ~80% SOC on a DC fast charger?
Q3. A car has a 7.2 kW onboard AC charger. It is plugged into an 11 kW Level 2 station. What rate does it draw?
Q4. For DC fast charging, what limits the peak charging rate?
Q5. A driver pulls up to a 150 kW DC fast charger but only sees 50 kW on the dashboard. Most likely cause?
Q6. How does cold weather affect EV charging speed?
Q7. Which is the practical road-trip rule?

Why charging speed is confusing

Charging time depends on five things stacked on top of each other: battery size, charging power, the cap on the lower side (vehicle vs station), state of charge, and temperature. Get any of those wrong in your estimate and the math is off.

This quiz tests whether you can do the math AND whether you understand the practical rules of thumb.
