EV Connector Compatibility Checker
Six major connectors, dozens of combinations, and a confusing migration to NACS in progress. This tool tells you whether a given pairing works — directly, with an adapter, or not at all.
The six connectors that matter
- J1772 (Type 1)
- North American AC standard. Used by every non-Tesla EV sold in the US/Canada pre-2025. AC only — up to 19.2 kW depending on onboard charger.
- Type 2 (Mennekes)
- European AC standard. AC only — supports up to 22 kW single-phase or 43 kW three-phase.
- CCS Type 1 (Combo 1)
- North American DC fast-charging standard. Combines a J1772 AC connector with two extra DC pins. Up to ~350 kW.
- CCS Type 2 (Combo 2)
- European DC fast-charging standard. Combines a Type 2 AC connector with two extra DC pins. Up to ~350 kW.
- CHAdeMO
- Japanese DC fast-charging standard. Being phased out outside Japan. Found mostly on older Nissan Leafs.
- NACS (J3400)
- Tesla's original connector, now an open standard (SAE J3400). North America-wide adoption underway 2024-2026. Handles both AC and DC up to ~1 MW.
What the NACS transition means
Through 2025-2026, most major North American automakers (Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, Polestar, Volvo, Mercedes, others) are shipping NACS connectors on new vehicles. Existing CCS Type 1 vehicles are getting adapters that work at most Tesla Superchargers.
Practically: by 2027, you'll see NACS at almost every new station in North America, with CCS Type 1 connectors still on the same stations for older vehicles. Europe remains on CCS Type 2.
Adapters worth knowing about
- J1772-to-NACS (included with every Tesla) — lets Tesla owners charge at non-Tesla Level 2 stations.
- CCS-to-NACS adapter — Tesla sells one; Ford and GM bundle them with eligible vehicles. Enables Tesla Supercharger access for non-Tesla EVs.
- NACS-to-CCS adapter — for NACS-equipped non-Tesla vehicles charging at CCS stations.
- CHAdeMO-to-CCS adapter — exists but expensive (~$1,500+) and capped at ~50 kW. Niche use case.
